Zu HELVETIA;
On the 14th April 1892 the Swiss watch company Louis Brandt & Frere registered the name Helvetia as one of the brand names for their watches. Two years later in 1894 they also registered the name Omega and applied it to a new range of high quality lever movement pocket watches they had developed using cutting edge manufacturing technology.
So successful were the new Omega watches that the Brandt brothers decided to form a new company alongside Louis Brandt & Frere and move the production of some of their other watches to it to in order to make extra room in their Bienne factory to allow increased production of Omega watches.
On the 5th August 1895 the new company Société dHorlogerie La Générale was formed in La Chaux de-Fonds as a joint venture the directors being Louis Paul Brandt, Edouard Boillat of the ébauche company Ed. Boillat & Cie and initially Louis Courvoisier though he resigned in 1897. 1897 was also the year that the company was additionally registered under its English name, General Watch Co, and moved its registered office to Bienne.
Following the founding of La Générale production of most of Louis Brandt & Freres lower quality cylinder watches were moved there including the brands Helvetia, Paradox, Jura, Gurzelen and Cosmopolite.
La Générale watches were often marked on the dial and case La Générale, Successeur de Louis Brandt & Frere and it looks as if the Brandts were using the pull of their famous name to move the customers of their non-Omega watches over to La Générale allowing them to concentrate on Omega. Indeed, in 1903 they renamed their company from Louis Brandt & Frere to La Société Anonyme Louis Brandt & Frere (Omega Watch Co). Also in 1903 first Louis Paul and then César Brandt died and, though Adrien Brandt replaced them as a director of La Générale for several years, in 1911 the Omega Watch Co finally withdrew from La Générale and those brand names in use by them that were still registered under Omega were officially transferred.
Following the withdrawl of Omega, Edouard Boillat transferred the rest of the company Ed. Boillat & Cie to the control of La Générale including his factory at Reconvilier to allow him to concentrate on his metal foundry business.
In the years since 1895 La Générale had begun to make better quality lever movement watches, sold mainly under the Helvetia name, and in 1906 they built a new factory in Bienne with offices and workrooms for 104 workers. Here they developed a 13 ligne movement that was used in smaller fob watches and then in their first wristwatches around 1907. They also registered brand names in their own right such as General in 1902, Adonis in 1905 and Orta in 1911.
In 1972 Montres Helvetia Société d'Horlogerie La Générale officially changed its name to Montres Helvetia S.A. dropping the name La Générale or General Watch Co. that it had retained since its formation in 1895. Another company named the General Watch Holding Co. had been formed the year before as part of AUSAG. This was a completely different company that had no links with La Générale or Helvetia but possibly Helvetia thought it best to avoid confusion by dropping the La Générale part of its name.
At the annual general meeting of Helvetia S.A. on 16th February 1973 it was decided to dissolve the company! This was not the end for the Helvetia name however as on the same day Silvana S.A. held its own annual general meeting, and Silvana S.A. changed its name to Helvetia S.A.

Artista: dopo Louis de Boullogne il Giovane (1654-1733).
Incisore: Charles Dupuis (1685-1742).

Condizione: incollata su cartone, segni del tempo.
Note: esistono tirature posteriori eseguite dalla "Chalcographie du Louvre", istituzione creata nel 1797. Dal 1848 le copie sono timbrate a secco con la scritta "Chalcographie du Louvre - Musées nationaux" e "Musée du Louvre - chalcographie". Questa dovrebbe essere una tiratura originale del XVIII secolo, in ogni caso, non presentando timbri, antecedente al 1848.

About the Artist: ?Boris Goncharov Simon, born 8 January 1913 in Malzéville, Lorraine and died in Saint-Cloud 14 April 1972 Was a painter, a writer and translator French .
His family is French by his father, Pol Simon, mathematics works manager at Nancy, passion for art and literature, Russian and his mother, Elisabeth Goncharov (writer Ivan Goncharov was his great-uncle) . Because of the First World War , the Russian Revolution and its aftermath, Boris and his brother Sacha eldest stayed with their grandmother Russian mother from 1914 to 1921. In khâgne, Nancy, Boris was linked to friendship with the writer Henri Thomas he knew the Poincaré Nancy high school and both have maintained a long correspondence until 1943. Boris Goncharov Simon was the author of novels for young scouts.
His best known work is a testimony to the Emmaus Movement founded by Abbé Pierre . His story written since 1952, The Dressers Emmaus, published in 1954, upon its release was adapted to film and projected in 1955 .
Boris Simon is also known as a translator of German, particularly in the works of Thomas Bernhard . The other three brothers Boris also had literary or artistic activities. The eldest, Sacha Simon (1908-2011), was a reporter and writer. Louis, born in 1911, also author of novels Scouts, wrote popular songs, set to music by César Geoffray . The younger, Roman (1916-2007) was a very large animal illustrator for youth.?
