This is a glass-cased entomology draw from The London Natural History Museum?s Rothchild, Cockayne & Kettlewell Collection.
Commissioned in the 19th century by Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron. The cabinet maker was: J.J. HILL & SON, CABINET WORKS, YEWFIELD RD, WILLESDEN, LONDON NW10.
The glass case contains a selection of modern recently mounted set butterflies. (The butterflies are unidentified and unlabelled. No CITES species).
During his lifetime Lionel Walter Rothschild amassed a collection of:
2,000 mounted mammals
about 2000 mounted birds
2 million butterflies and moths
300,000 bird skins
144 giant tortoises
200,000 birds' eggs
30,000 relevant books
Lionel Walter Rothschild, 3rd Baronet, 2nd Baron, died on 27 August 1937. Walter bequeathed his museum and his collections to the British Museum. Known today as the Natural History Museum at Tring, the museum celebrates Walter's passion for the natural world.
