A really good quality Chinese camphor wood chest, profusely carved and dating from circa 1920s. With deeply carved reliefs on the top and front. The sides and back are also carved. To the sides are two carved hand handles along with its original fancy brass latch to the lid. Inside, the chest is clean and is lined with camphor wood with its distinctive aroma and has a removable tray. This is a really good example with some good deep detailed carving and a good colour.
Camphor boxes were used for storing and carrying sillk, tea and porcelain from China to Europe in the 18 and 19th centuries. Known for its fresh fragrance, camphor wood is native to South East Asia. It is a natural repellant against wood-boring insects and moths, and therefore, is ideal for storage. This ornately carved camphor box would make a beautiful addition to a traditional as well as a contemporary decor set up. Would make a great blanket chest, storage box or could be used as a decorative coffee table or TV stand. Could be nice for a bench too.
