The Proto, which debuted in 1988, is the one its champions call the perfect steel Bianchi. It is a TIG-welded race frame built from Columbus MAX tubing (the exotic, oversize/bi-oval steel associated with pro-level stiffness in that era), thats pretty unique in the Bianchi canon, loved for its iconic lug-free design and instantly recognisable, and rather chunky fork.
It did rather well when racing too. Used by both the GewissBianchi and Ariostea teams it carried Moreno Argentin to the top spot in the 1990 Tour of Flanders and also to a stage win of the 1990 Tour de France.
Bianchi produced the Proto roughly 19881992 and it was top dog in the early 90s catalogues. That short run is the core of its rarity; youre shopping a narrow window of production. When the bikes do pop up for sale, they sell very quickly, invariably for £34k.
