Opae Ula also known as supershrimp are one of the rarest (and easiest) to keep variety of shrimp!
They are found in brackish water pools near the seashore of the volcanic islands in Hawaii.
They are very easy to keep, you do NOT need a filter, nor aeration, nor water changes.
They can be kept in tanks as small as 5 Liters, although 10 liters is recommended.
They prefer a salinity of 1.010. To achieve this salinity in your tank, you need to mix 18grams of marine salt with 1 liter of distilled water. (If you are interested I also offer smaller packets of marine salt to help you set up your tank, 180grams for a 10L tank for 5 CHF.)
Ideally you can provide some lava rocks in the tank to mimic their natural environment. You can see in the picture my set up.
They eat very little, they usually go by eating the bio film or algae formed on the glass or on the lava rocks. You only need to feed them once or twice at the begging when starting a new tank, once there is enough biofilm, they can live of that indefinitely. (I can also provide you with the initial amount of food for free)
I have a self sustaining colony for around 2 years and they reproduce and are happy zooming around without any external food or interference.
They do well in temperatures from 20-30 C so you do NOT need a temperature controller either.
The only maintenance I do for the tank is topping off the evaporated water on a regular basis, every couple of weeks or so. If you?re leaving for longer than that, I recommend closing or covering the tank to avoid water evaporation.
They are incredible active shrimp, they rarely hide and love zooming around the tank grassing on biofilm all day. You?ll spend hours and hours looking at them.
I?m happy to help with any advice if needed. All the pictures are from my 30 Liter tank.
