Jørn Utzon, New Angle, designed for the Sydney Opera House

In the late 1960s, Jørn Utzon and Fritz Hansen explored a new idea: a furniture system built from architectural logic. What emerged as a concept during his work on the Sydney Opera House originally intended for its interiors was never realised there after Utzon left the complex project. Instead, the polygonal, timeless idea found its form at Fritz Hansen as New Angle.
Made with aluminium frames in nine different sizes based on a 70 × 70 cm module, the system allowed chairs, sofas, tables and display elements to be composed like architectural units. A strict grid and a playful 45° angle unlocked a surprising freedom: surfaces could appear anywhere in the room, at any height, in countless configurations.
The armchairs and sofa have been re-upholstered and re-covered in Vidar 4, Col. 0633, by Fanny Aronsen & Raf Simons for Kvadrat.
Utzon described it as a system that «develops as beautifully in character as the trees in the forest with their branches everyone can play with these components, create harmony in their own interior and follow their own wishes.»
Crafted at Fritz Hansen, New Angle demanded precision and a spirit of experimentation, pushing the production techniques of the time to their limits. Though it never became a commercial success, it was nominated for the 1968 AID International Design Award and remains a characteristic expression of Utzon's thinking a furniture system that behaves like architecture, open to change, adaptation and imagination.
